Role of the Board of Trustees
Non-profit organizations are governed by unpaid boards of volunteers which are granted broad duties under state and federal law. Fundamentally, they are responsible to see that the organizations fulfill the roles entrusted to them by the public. It is important to note that non-profit organizations are not owned by their boards, as, for instance, some private schools are owned by their directors or founders.
In the case of an independent school, the board is responsible for the school's fiscal health, for appointing and evaluating the head of school, and for ensuring that the school fulfills its stated mission and its purposes as designated in its charter from the Regents of the State University of New York.
In addition to these broad roles, Harbor's board sets the long-term direction of the school through periodic strategic planning exercises, and it involves itself deeply in bringing additional resources to the school by seeking and making financial contributions.
It is important to note that the Board does not "run" the school. That role is completely delegated to the Head of School, who reports to the board on a regular basis.
