Library

At Harbor we consider the library to be the soul of the school and our academic hub. Today, of course, the tendency is to seek all knowledge, do all research, on the web. Our belief is contrary. The web is powerful and invaluable. But the web represents speed; the library embodies patience. The web encourages the superficial; the library encourages depth. The web is today; the library represents the history of thought. Both the web and the library are essential to an educated person of the future.

The Harbor Country Day School library, which numbers more than 9,000 volumes, and which is augmented by our iMac media program, fosters the love of reading, develops an appreciation of literature and supports the classroom curriculum.

In addition, the Library serves as a resource for all members of the community: nursery through the eighth grade, faculty and staff members. Through the use of print and electronic media, students in all grades visit the library to investigate books by favorite authors and to find information for reports and presentations. 

The library curriculum teaches students about interesting books, the organization of the library, and how to use the resources of print and electronic media.  Harbor's library is automated, thanks to fundraising and endless volunteering by the Parents' Association. Using the computerized catalog, students can discover whether their school library has their favorite books or the information that they need for a report.
