The Lower School offers a comprehensive and exciting learning experience for students in grades 1 – 4. Driven by Harbor's mission statement, the academic program seeks to prepare students for the challenges and complexities of an ever-changing world. The students in the Lower School are provided the groundwork necessary for academic and personal success. The foundation skills of learning to read well, to write clearly, to reason soundly, and to speak effectively are stressed. Creative expression is encouraged, and responsible, effective study habits are developed.

Director, Lower School

The curriculum is designed to not only develop critical thinking and problem-solving, but to create a smooth transition from one grade to the next. The curriculum clearly exceeds New York State Standards. In addition to reading, writing, and mathematics, the Lower School classes complete a full grade level course in science and social studies. Regularly scheduled classes in vocal and instrumental music, studio art, computer, physical education, and library complete the core curriculum. Field trips throughout the school year complement the course of study. Foreign language instruction, beginning with French in first grade, continues with increasing frequency and fluency through fourth grade.

The students in the Lower School learn to work together as a community with respect for each other and with pride in their accomplishments. Our goal is to inspire Harbor students to be responsible citizens and life long-learners.
