Who "owns" the school?
Harbor Country Day School is a not-for-profit corporation held in trust by a Board of Trustees which is comprised of parents, former parents, alumni, and professionals in the community. In addition to selecting and evaluating the Head of School, the Board is responsible for the financial security, physical plant, and long-range planning of the School.

What testing is administered each year?
All Harbor students, grades one through eight, take the appropriate Educational Records Bureau (ERB) test each winter. The results are sent to the School, where teachers and administrators evaluate each child's test results for strengths and weaknesses in a number of skill areas. This enables us to effectively monitor each student's progress from year to year. Students in Honors Math take the Math A Regents in eighth grade. Foreign Language students take the Oral Proficiency tests in grade eight.

What type of enrichment program is available for strong students?
Strong students are able to accelerate in core academic classes working with their individual teachers. In addition, The Challenge Program is an enrichment pull-out program available to Lower School students. Students in the Upper School can qualify for the Math Honors course. In addition to individual enrichment work, Upper School students can pursue their interests in after-school clubs.

Why should students attend HCDS in their middle school years?
Harbor's Upper School (grades five through eight) offers a rigorous academic program. We offer each student the opportunity to engage in the learning process, excel in areas of personal academic interest, and assume leadership roles, where they grow in confidence and self-awareness. Many Harbor students enter high school at an advanced placement level.

What is the average class size in grades one through eight?
Harbor's average class size for first through eighth grade is 14 students.

Which high schools do HCDS graduates attend?
Harbor graduates are excelling in just about every parochial, public, and independent school in the area. Harbor graduates from the past few years are attending: Friends Academy, The Stony Brook School, St. Anthony's, St. Joseph's, St. John the Baptist, Smithtown, Port Jefferson, Ward Melville, Hauppauge, and Kings Park High Schools.

How active is the Parents' Association (PA)?
Harbor’s Parents' Association (PA) maintains a very active schedule of fund-raising and social activities throughout the year.  Parents of enrolled Harbor Country Day students automatically become PA members and are encouraged to actively participate and support PA activities.  A sampling of PA activities include: wrapping paper fund-raisers, Super Raffle Gala, Family Fun Nights, Book Fairs, concerts, and many educational programs and special events for students, Nursery through 8th grade.
